On September 4, it was reported that the Taobao app would soon fully support WeChat Pay.
The integration of WeChat Pay with Taobao has been in progress for nearly a year. As early as October 2023, some users observed a “WeChat QR Code Payment” option on the Taobao payment page, along with a feature to “ask a friend on WeChat to pay.” Taobao clarified that this QR Code Payment option was being gradually introduced, initially available only to a limited group of users and for specific types of products. The availability of this payment option depended on what was displayed on the user’s payment page.
In early 2024, several users found that some Taobao orders could be directly paid for using WeChat Pay. When approached by the media, Taobao’s online customer service confirmed that WeChat Pay was a newly launched service being gradually rolled out for Taobao orders. It was initially available to a limited number of users and only for certain products. However, customer service indicated that the feature would eventually be fully deployed, although no specific timeline was provided.
This development is part of a broader trend among major companies in the industry, such as Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, Meituan, Alipay, Douyin, Kuaishou, and The Little Red Book, who are working to dismantle barriers to enhance interconnectivity. This “interconnectivity” strategy has become a common objective for these internet giants. For example, Meituan has already integrated Alipay mini-programs for services like delivery and hotel booking and has launched joint operations.
The push for greater interconnectivity between platforms and payment systems aims to enhance payment convenience, boost consumer spending, and comply with regulatory requirements for increased connectivity.
