A man in China, referred to as Xiaojun, managed to sustain relationships with four other women while being married, all within the same residential complex. Astonishingly, one of these women lived in the same building as his wife. This arrangement remained undiscovered for over four years, which has left many on Chinese social media in disbelief.
Xiaojun, whose age is not disclosed, comes from Jilin province in northeastern China. He had a modest upbringing, having dropped out of secondary school. Despite this, he successfully portrayed himself as a “wealthy second-generation” individual and won over his wife, Xiaojia. In reality, his mother worked at a bathhouse, and his father took on various part-time construction jobs. However, Xiaojun fabricated a tale of them being successful entrepreneurs and often purchased fake luxury items online as gifts for Xiaojia.
After Xiaojia became pregnant, they registered their marriage. Once she discovered Xiaojun’s true financial situation, she chose not to pursue a divorce but decided to raise their child alone, eventually kicking him out.
Within a week of moving out, Xiaojun met another woman named Xiaohong through an online game. Using similar methods, he gained her trust and affection. Under the guise of preparing their future home, he convinced her to lend him 140,000 yuan (approximately US$19,700), all of which he spent maintaining his affluent facade. He even rented an apartment in the same building as his estranged wife and moved in with Xiaohong after she became pregnant.
Despite already balancing an estranged wife and a new partner, Xiaojun continued his schemes with three more women: university students Xiaomin and Xiaoxin, and nurse Xiaolan. He defrauded them of 15,000 yuan (US$2,100), 10,000 yuan, and 8,000 yuan, respectively.
In April of last year, when Xiaoxin urgently needed money for tuition fees and asked for the return of her 10,000 yuan, Xiaojun met her in a rented luxury car and handed her a black plastic bag, claiming it contained 100,000 yuan for “important business.” Trusting him, she did not open the bag immediately. Feeling ignored by Xiaojun a month later, she finally opened it, only to find it was filled with practice cash used for bank training. Outraged, she reported him to the authorities, leading to his arrest.
Ironically, Xiaojun’s legal wife and Xiaohong only realized they were sharing the same husband after receiving calls from the police while walking with their children in the residential area.
The People’s Procuratorate of Fengman District, Jilin City, recently sentenced Xiaojun to nine years and six months in prison and fined him 120,000 yuan for fraud, bigamy, and theft. A sum of 280,000 yuan acquired through his deceit was confiscated and returned to his victims.
This story, covered by Legal Daily, has shocked numerous netizens across China, prompting comments such as, “Is this really not a joke? How could he manage five relationships without being caught?” Another remarked, “He truly brought ‘the safest place is the most dangerous place’ to an expert level,” while yet another added, “Even TV dramas wouldn’t dare write such a plot. Four years, all in the same complex – he practically created his own harem!”
