A half-marathon held in northeastern China has captured widespread attention for its unique prizes, which include a cow for the champion, as well as wild fish, chickens, and ducks for other winners. These unconventional rewards have generated significant interest, with many eager to participate in the event.
On December 3, Chongqing Daily News Group reported that the race took place in Nong’an County, Changchun, Jilin Province. The event featured two main categories: a half-marathon and a 5-km health run. According to the competition rules, the top 50 finishers in the half-marathon would receive a mix of cash and local products as prizes. The first-place winner would take home a cow, while the runners-up would receive prized wild fish. Those finishing fourth through 20th would be awarded either a goose or a rooster, and participants placing 30th or lower would be given 10 kilograms of rice or whole wheat flour.
The event organizer explained, “This year, the top prize is indeed a cow. Last year, we awarded wild fish to the winner, while second-place finishers received chickens and ducks. To make this year’s competition more distinctive, the champion has the option to either take the cow home or exchange it for 6,000 yuan (approximately $820).”
The organizer further highlighted that the prizes were chosen to reflect local agricultural products, adding a touch of regional character to the event and boosting its overall appeal. “The response to registration has been overwhelming, with many participants expressing excitement about the unique prizes,” the organizer added.
In recent years, more people in China have embraced healthier lifestyles and shown a growing interest in marathons, drawn by the events’ social and interactive nature, which strongly resonate with fitness enthusiasts.
