A Chinese woman caused a one-hour flight delay and was eventually escorted off a plane after refusing to place her designer handbag under the seat in front of her when instructed by a flight attendant. The incident, which occurred on an August 10 flight from an airport in Chongqing municipality to Hebei province in northern China, quickly went viral on Douyin, garnering 4 million views and sparking intense debate online after a fellow passenger shared a video of the altercation.

The woman, seated in economy class, insisted on keeping her Louis Vuitton handbag beside her rather than storing it under the seat as required. This led to the plane, operated by China Express Airlines, returning to the gate just as it was about to depart. Passengers reportedly applauded when police arrived to escort the woman off the flight, which subsequently caused delays for other flights as well.

In China, a Louis Vuitton handbag can cost around US$3,000, while the economy class ticket for the flight was approximately 800 yuan (US$110). The airline has not commented on the incident or disclosed the outcome following discussions with the passenger involved. The woman’s identity remains undisclosed.

The incident has ignited heated discussions on social media platforms in mainland China. While some criticized the passenger for her actions, others questioned whether the flight attendant had been overly strict in enforcing the rule.

One Weibo user commented, “She valued the bag more than her life.” Meanwhile, a Douyin user suggested, “The flight attendant could have provided her with a bag to place her handbag in. Was it really necessary to delay the flight and remove her?” Another observer noted that they had seen many economy passengers keeping small bags on their seats during takeoff without issue.

However, some defended the flight attendant, emphasizing the importance of safety regulations. “The rule wasn’t enforced without reason. The woman should prioritize her safety and that of other passengers over her bag,” one commenter argued.

Airline safety protocols require passengers to place their bags under the seat in front of them to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles during turbulence or blocking escape routes in an emergency.
