Gao Hongbo, the Party Secretary of Rongchang District in Chongqing Municipality, Southwestern China, has urged local officials to take the lead in driving and guiding local consumption. According to The Paper, Gao encouraged all officials to purchase new clothing in preparation for the upcoming Spring Festival and to dine out with their families on weekends.
These remarks were made during an economic work conference held on Monday.
During the meeting, Gao emphasized the importance of stimulating consumption across multiple sectors and implementing the “three major consumption initiatives.” These initiatives aim to promote spending through targeted policies, organized events, and leveraging new media platforms.
Specifically, Gao outlined three key focuses: stabilizing large-scale consumption through policy measures, attracting external spending via cultural and sports activities, and encouraging local consumption by utilizing the reach of new media platforms. He also called on officials to actively participate in these efforts by engaging in consumer activities such as dining out and buying new clothes.
Gao highlighted the potential economic impact of such efforts, noting that if 10,000 people spent an average of 60 to 100 yuan (approximately $8 to $13) per meal, the weekly total could reach 1 million yuan, providing meaningful support to small local businesses.
In addition, Gao encouraged social organizations and private businesses to reward employees with additional wages and bonuses ahead of the Spring Festival, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. He suggested that employers who are financially able should take these steps to motivate and recognize their workforce, The Paper reported.
