Chinese manufacturers are asserting that they are the actual originators of luxury handbags, sparking a fierce debate on TikTok. Popular videos assert that these factories are the real producers of classic designs from renowned brands such as Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and Lululemon.
Accounts including @lunasourcingchina and @senbags2 have uploaded videos suggesting that as much as 80% of luxury bags are manufactured in China. A video from @senbags2, which stated that China makes the majority of luxury handbags, amassed over 10 million views before it was removed. These content creators have also provided links to purchase similar items at significantly lower prices.
The release of these videos aligns with the ongoing US-China trade conflict. According to experts, it remains uncertain whether these assertions are true or part of a propaganda effort. Nevertheless, the videos have initiated conversations about the high markups of luxury brands and the feasibility of purchasing directly from Chinese manufacturers.
Some users are excited about the prospect of obtaining luxury goods at reduced prices, while others are skeptical about the validity of these claims. Although many luxury brands do have production facilities in China, it is improbable that the products sold by these TikTok creators are authentic. Instead, they might be offering “superfakes” or high-quality imitations.
Luxury brands like Hermès and Louis Vuitton mainly produce their products in Europe. Still, certain components or parts could be manufactured in China. Consumers are advised to be careful, as buying from untrusted suppliers can result in acquiring counterfeit items and potential legal problems.
These videos have also brought up concerns regarding the morality of purchasing from Chinese factories and the implications of such practices on environmental protection and labor conditions.
